Buying that piano ...

When buying, the advantages of buying from a shop are that you get your piano delivered and usually a free tuning within six months of purchase, aside from the advice and wide range to choose from. Most of the Piano shops around Johannesburg have been going for many years and are not fly-by-night operations - as you may encounter in some other retail markets - and there is always some form of guarantee when you buy from a shop.

If you buy from the small ads or antique shops you have greatly reduced options at a possibly better price. You may be able to pick up a bargain, though this is set against the driving around to each seller. However, unless you know what you are buying it is all too easy to buy a lovely looking piece of furniture and a piece of rubbish as a musical instrument - it has happened. My advice is to take an expert along with you - I offer such a service (click here). at a small charge with a view to be able to do subsequent tunings when such purchases are made.

When you need your piano moved, if in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area call Mark 082 555 2800

Here are a couple of forums for additional piano advice by pianists and other techs.
