About myself - Brian Lawson. Born
and raised in England, after leaving school in 1977 I enrolled at
the London College of Furniture (now London Guildhall University). to take a 3 year course where I learnt the
skills of Piano Tuning, Repairs, Construction and Design. On the
course I spent almost everyday practicing how to tune a piano, so
as to become an expert. Also, as part of the course was a practical,
to build a new piano. This I did with another student, we built
a new Knight piano, with which we passed the practical requirement
for that part of the certificate. Along with this was study in piano
history, acoustics and other important aspects of piano regulation,
repair and reconditioning. In 1980 I graduated with City and Guilds
Certificates in:
Keyboard
Instrument Design
Action Finishing
& Regulation
Pianoforte Tuning
& Toning
Course Work Assessment
From there I went to work for
Robert
Morley & Company
in
Lewisham, London, where I worked as a piano technician from 1980
to 1983.
In '83 I decided to leave England and emigrated to Johannesburg, South Africa, where I worked for Khan's Pianos. From there I went to work for a piano retailer - The Keyboard. Later still I went to work at The Music Shop.
Now and for the past few years I have worked as an independant Piano Technician under the name Lawsonic Pianoforte Services. Amongst my clients today are recording studios, Sandton hotels, local colleges and schools, churchs and various music venues. I am also associated to several piano dealers around the country to do their pre-delivery and after delivery tunings and service.
In July 2000 I became a Registered Piano Technician in the
Piano Technicians Guild.
I am also a member of the
Master Piano Technicians of America
and a member of
South African Association for Professional Piano Tuners.
